Sheet metal sometimes springs back after being hit. And calculating how much springback might occur depends on (among other things) the material specs, its yield point, and the shape to which its being formed. Forming analysis systems like Dynaform or FastForm have been able to calculate this for some time.
It was then up to the die designer to go into his CAD system and redraw his tooling to have an overbent shape that would springback to the nominal value. But now we’re able to calculate this entirely inside a CAD system like VISI-Progress using a new function called VISI Springback.
VISI’s Springback Function
Using an analysis system like Dynaform or FastForm, you can validate how much a part will spring back after forming. The challenge is to then make overbend tooling that will allow the part to springback to nominal.
Luckily, we can now calculate springback in our CAD software. VISI-Progress‘s Springback function, which was built on VISI’s Target Driven Deformation module, allows users to create overbend geometry quickly and easily inside their CAD system. The software calculates the distance a sheet metal part springs back at many points across the model (you control how many points), and then it moves the surface the opposite direction, thus creating the overbend model.
The distance the tooling will be compensated is controlled as a percentage of the distance the part sprung back. Often, you don’t need to over-bend a part the full distance of the springback. For example, if a bend springs back 5-degrees, the tooling may only have to over-bend the part 4-degrees. Once VISI has deformed your tooling surfaces to include overbend, you can repeat your analysis to confirm that the part now springs back to the nominal part shape.
VISI-Progress‘s Springback function also accepts wire-frame sections or CMM data instead of analysis results.
